Frequently Asked Questions, House Policies, and Seating Arrangements

Where can I park when I visit the Edison? How much does it cost?

Edison patrons are permitted to park in the parking lots near the theatre Friday evening through Sunday evening except in a limited number of specifically designated red parking permit spaces directly in front of Simon Hall which are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Where are you located? How can I get to the Edison?

Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Student Center on Washington University's Hilltop Campus. Detailed directions can be found here.

If I am unable to attend a performance, will I be able to return or exchange my tickets?

All sales are final and there are no refunds and no exchanges. Only subscribers may exchange tickets. Friends of Edison may also exchange tickets for OVATIONS! events. Tickets are not transferable between series and must be presented to the Box Office Manager no later than 24 hours prior to the performance as listed on the ticket.

If you are unable to attend a performance, please contact the Box Office prior to the performance to exchange (Subscribers only) or release the ticket. The ticket can be made available for another patron, and you can receive a charitable gift tax receipt.

What does it mean to be a subscriber? How can I subscribe?

The Edison Theatre box office offers subscriptions to four different series: OVATIONS!, ovations! for young people, the Performing Arts Department Series, and the Music Department series. Subscribers receive priority seating before tickets go on-sale to the general public, a discount on their subscription order, exchange privileges, and letters with advance information on upcoming events in the Edison. Order at least the minimum number of performances required in a series to be considered a subscriber to that series.

If I’m a subscriber, can I exchange between series?

No, exchange privileges are limited to the series of the event that a subscriber holds tickets for. For examples, tickets to an OVATIONS! event can only be exchanged for tickets within the OVATIONS! series. If you are unsure of what series you are a subscriber to or if the event you wish to exchange for is in that series, contact our Box Office Manager at 314.935.6543.

What kinds of discounts do you offer?

We offer discounts for Washington University faculty, staff, and students, high school and college students, children under 12, and senior citizens age 65 and over. There is a limit of 2 discounted tickets per person with a valid photo ID.

Do you ever have any special offers?

The Edison Theatre OVATIONS! series is a participating member in the Big Thank You. Check their website often for the lastest special offer.

What are the Box Office hours?

Regular box office hours during the Washington University School Year:
Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
and one hour prior to showtime.

What types of payment do you accept? Do I have to come to your Box Office to order tickets?

Tickets can be paid by cash, check, money order, or charged to a valid Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover Card and may be purchased at the box office window, over the phone, or by mail. We are unable to hold tickets without payment. Tickets can also be ordered online through Metrotix.

How is seating handled for your events? Is it assigned?

Seating for all shows in the Edison Theatre is assigned. A house map is available at the box office window to assist you in choosing your seats. An usher will be available at showtime to assist you in finding your seats. Seating for the other venues sold through our box office such as the A. E. Hotchner Studio and Graham Chapel are general admission.

Is the Edison available for rent?

The Edison Theatre is available for rental. Because of the high demand on the space, we recommend that you inquire with Operations Manager at least one year before your planned event. For fees and detailed information about renting the theatre, please visit our Technical Specifications page or contact the Operations Manager at 314.935.6564.

How can I support the Edison? The Performing Arts Department? The Music Department?

If you wish to make a monetary donation to the Edison Theatre, you can do so through our Friends of Edison organization. The Friends of Edison is a group of people who support the continued growth of the OVATIONS! series through different levels of giving. Friends receive special benefits through the OVATIONS! series and within the Washington University community.

If you would like to volunteer your time to support the Edison, we are always looking for friendly, energetic people to join our usher corps. For more information on ushering, please contact our box office at 314.935.6543.

What if I am late?

Please be aware that the Edison Theatre doors are closed once a performance begins. This is to ensure the safety of latecomers and protect the artistic integrity of the performance. At appropriate intervals, the House Manager will seat patrons in late seating areas. There is ABSOLUTELY NO LATE SEATING for performances in the A.E. Hotchner Studio.
